The Marikana Commission has heard that National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega rushed into issuing statements before finding facts from victims of the Marikana shootings.

Phiyega is facing tough cross-examination.

Evidence leader at the Marikana Commission, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, says Phiyega jumped the gun and issued a one sided statement, protecting the police without having heard the versions of the miners.

A total of 34 miners were shot dead on August 16.

Madlanga says Phiyega should have taken steps to ensure that versions opposing that of the police were heard.

"General, the distinct impression that I get, and this is what we will submit at the end of the commissions proceedings, is that you rushed to issue a press statement that absolved South African Police Service (SAPS) from any wrongdoing without having taken steps to consider possible opposing versions. You rushed headlong," says Madlanga.

The national commissioner however believes her statement was factual and she has dismissed Madlanga's suggestions that she never conducted thorough research into what exactly transpired on the day.
