The AIDS epidemic has caused many children in South Africa to become half or full orphans. Members of the older generation in particular must now keep families together and feed the children. To deal with this problem, GAPA (Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS) was founded in 2001. The organization not only teaches grandmothers of affected families how to deal with the devastating consequences of this epidemic, but also how to earn extra money by operating small businesses. The older generation also gives society something they had long given up on: hope for a future.
