Improved "climbers" have transformed beans from a subsistence crop to a cash crop in Rwanda. Climbing beans can be three-times more productive than bush beans - a crucial characteristic when land is in short supply. Through the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA)'s work with the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), new, tougher climbing bean varieties, some of which contain higher levels of essential nutrients like iron and zinc, have been developed and swiftly adopted by smallholder farmers.
