Washington — President Clinton and leaders from many nations are heading for Morocco for the funeral Sunday of Morocco's King Hassan II. The monarch, who was 70, died late Friday from a heart attack after being admitted to hospital with acute pneumonia. He had been in failing health for several years.
His eldest son, Sidi Mohammed, broke the news to the Moroccan people in a speech on TV. The crown prince immediately succeeded his father, taking the title Mohammed VI.
Other leaders expected to travel to Rabat include South African President Thabo Mbeki, French President Jacques Chirac, who is visiting Nigeria, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Syrian President Hafez al-Assad.
