Africa: Maria Mutola -- Mozambique

14 September 2000

Washington, D.C. — She played soccer as a child but when she moved to Eugene, Oregon in the US to attend high school she blossomed as a runner. Inexperience was a problem at first - in 1991 she caused a finish-line pileup at the World Championships. Since then she has become the dominant Women's 800m runner and is similarly powerful when she occasionally enters 1500m races. She missed winning a gold medal at last summer's World Championships because she stepped out of her lane but she she won every race she entered for the rest of the year.
