Africa: Noureddine Morceli -- Algeria

Washington, D.C. — At the 1991 Tokyo Olympics, all Algerian eyes were focused on the 1500 meter race where the then 21-year old Morceli was in head-to-head competition with Moroccan great and world record holder Said Aouita. He beat Aouita by completing the last 300 meters in 39 seconds, the fastest time ever. Algeria gained its first Olympic medal. He won gold for the 1500 meter race again in Atlanta. He has not raced since he fell at the world championships in Seville last year.His decision to run in the 1500m surprized many but the athlete insists he is not retiring.
