Africa: Hicham El Gerrouj - Morocco

15 September 2000

Washington, D.C. — The 26-year-old Moroccan is the best miler in the world today. Soccer was his game as a boy, he played in goal. But because he was often yelled at by his mother for getting his clothes dirty, he switched to running. He holds three world records, including a time of 3.4.13 for the mile. He's favoured to win the 1500m in Sydney, although he faces stiff competition there from Kenya's Noah Ngeny.
