Zambia: Lusaka Agrees To Help Flood-hit Neighbour

Zambia has agreed to a Mozambican request not to open spill gates on the Kariba dam which would worsen the flooding in central Mozambique, PANA reported.

Mozambican High Commissioner to Zambia Cristofa Jamo was quoted as saying on Sunday that "the Zambian government assured us they will only open the gates if the dam walls are threatened." Kariba feeds into Mozambique's Cahora Bassa dam which is close to capacity and has been forced to discharge water into the flooded Zambeze river valley. The Zambia Information Service said two spill gates have been open at Kariba since 15 February to cope with Zambia's heavy rains, but quoted Zambezi River Authority officials as saying it would not cause serious difficulties for Mozambique,
