Washington DC — At a luncheon at Africare headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, March 8, Africare - on behalf of its honorary chairman Nelson Mandela, chairman Ernest G. Green and the entire board of directors - welcomed five new board members: MacArthur DeShazer, William Ford, Patricia Watkins Lattimore, Princeton Lyman, and Robert L. Mallett.
MacArthur DeShazer, former Associate Deputy Under Secretary of Labor for International Labor Affairs, has held a number of key international policy positions. Prior to his appointment to the U.S. Department of Labor, he was President of the National Summit on Africa, served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1996, and served on the staff of the White House National Security Council as Director for African Affairs (1993 - 1996).
William R. Ford recently retired from his position as President and CEO of the African Development Foundation (ADF). Prior to his time at ADF, he was the Deputy Director of the United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) Mission to South Africa and the Director for the USAID Mission to Nigeria. Ford also served as the Director of the D.C. Department of Employment Services (1979 - 1981).
Patricia Watkins Lattimore is the newly appointed Director of Human Resources for the D.C. Public Schools. Previously, she was the former Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management and Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Department of Labor. She also served as the Associate Director for Investigations, Associate Director for Administration, and the Deputy Associate Director for Career Entry and Employee Development at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
Princeton N. Lyman is currently the Executive Director of the Aspen Institute's Global Interdependence Initiative. Ambassador Lyman has a distinguished career in the foreign service, serving as the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizational Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to South Africa and Nigeria. Prior to that he worked at the U.S. Agency for International Development in Korea and Ethiopia. Ambassador Lyman received the President's Distinguished Service Award in 1993 and the Secretary of State's Career Achievement Award in 1999.
Robert L. Mallett, the former Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Commerce, played a lead role in promoting full market access for American companies in countries around the globe. Prior to that position he practiced law and served as a City Administrator and Deputy Mayor for the nation's capital under Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelley. For several years, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Georgetown Law Center and the Georgetown Graduate Public Policy Program. He is presently a Visiting Professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
