African Gold Medals at Edmunton

Washington, DC — African athletes collected twenty-four medals, ten of them gold, at the World Athletics Championship in Canada. That's two more than in Seville 1999. Most of the medals in Edmonton were picked up in the long distance events which climaxed in a third world title for the Moroccan Hicham El Gerrouj in the 1500 metres. And with three golds, three silver and one bronze, the Kenyans ranked way up there with the Americans and the Russians. Listed below are the gold medal winners

1500m - Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco
5000m -Richard Limo from Kenya
10,000m - Charles Kamathi from Kenya
Marathon - Gezahegne Abera from Ethiopia
3000m Steeplechase - Rueben Kosgei from Kenya
WOMEN'S EVENTS:
400m - Amy Mbacke Thiam from Senegal
800m - Maria Mutola from Mozambique
10,000m - Derartu Tulu from Ethiopia
400m Hurdles - Nezha Bidouane from Morocco
High jump - Hestrie Cloete from South Africa
