Washington, DC — Due to yesterday's tragic events, The U.S.-Africa Business Summit has been rescheduled for October 30-November 2, according to an announcement today by the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA). The Summit, organized by CCA, will be the largest gathering of African government and business leaders ever to convene in the United States (outside of the United Nations). The Summit was originally scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on September 16-20.
Confirmed participants included 13 presidents, three prime ministers, the president of OPEC, and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce (scheduled to deliver a major address of the Administration's trade policy for Africa), as well as numerous officials from the multilateral to local levels. The roster of confirmed delegates includes over 1400 delegates, with representation from all 53 African nations.
"Our nation and the world need time to mourn," said CCA President Stephen Hayes, "and many attendees would have encountered considerable travel and other logistical difficulties. We therefore believe that all participants in the U.S.-Africa Business Summit will be better served by this postponement."
Keynotes and workshops will focus on focus on topics such as:
--conflict resolution -- energy/oil and gas, utilities --trade and investment promotion --banking/financial services --biotechnology --health care/HIV --mining --telecommunications/information technology --agribusiness --transportation --environment/sustainable development
The Summit venue is the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Advance registration is required to space and stringent security considerations. Media registration forms can be obtained from CCA's headquarters in Washington, DC. Only accredited media will have access to Summit event venues.
More than 190 American companies make up the Corporate Council on Africa which, since 1992, has been the leading private sector organization dedicated to strengthening trade and investment ties between the U.S. and Africa. CCA is a 501(c)(3) organization whose members represent nearly 85 percent of total U.S. private sector investments in Africa.
