Africa: Colin Powell Cancels Speech At 2001 US-Africa Business Summit

Philadelphia — Due to the ongoing war against terrorism, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell cancelled his appearance at the U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Philadelphia, the largest-ever gathering of American and African business leaders in the United States. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Walter Kansteiner will deliver Secretary Powell's prepared remarks. Powell was scheduled to speak at the summit's November 1 luncheon.

An estimated 1,200 business and government leaders from Africa and the United States will participate in the four-day event, including African Presidents Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria and Joseph Kabila of Congo.

The Corporate Council on Africa, established in 1992, is a nonpartisan 501 (c) (3) membership organization of more than 195 American corporations dedicated to strengthening the commercial relationship between the United States and Africa.
