Mozambique: Worker Detained in Attorney-General's Office

Maputo — A former personal secretary to Mozambique's Attorney-General Joaquim Madeira has been detained on suspicion of corruption, reports Saturday's issue of the daily paper "Noticias".

The man, who was not named, was arrested last week, when he was discovered photocopying documents from cases that are still sub judice. It is suspected that criminals were paying him to obtain these documents.

According to Madeira, last year the same worker committed a series of irregularities, as a result of which he was demoted. He was sacked as Madeira's secretary, but given another job within the secretariat of the Attorney-General's office.

Madeira's office is now investigating whether there are others among the secretarial staff who are being used by organised criminal gangs, or by anyone else who may be interested in hindering the normal operations of justice.
