Nigeria: Island News Alleged Reporter's Harassment

29 May 2004

Lagos — Management of Island News, a Lagos Island-based weekly magazine, has raised alarm over an alleged harassment and detention of their reporters by some militarymen.

In a statement, the management stated that on May 17, they received a phone call from a concerned resident in Lagos Island that a luxury bus owned by Ekesons Transport Company had been abandoned along Keffi road, Ikoyi, Lagos, adding that the concern of the resident was heightened by the fact that the vehicle's interior was stashed with cash and based on the phone call, one of their reporters, Miss Savannah Peters, was sent to the scene. While trying to report the incident, she was assaulted by soldiers from the 81 Division Garrison, Dodan Barracks, under the command of one Major P. Jackson, who also ordered her detention and seizure of her digital camera.
