Congo-Kinshasa: Natural Resources Integrated Management in the Taganyika Lake Region - ADF Supports DRC in Its Resources Management

press release

Tunis — The African Development Fund (ADF) will actively participate to the protection of the natural resources which are vital to the TanganyikaLake region's local populations. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) signed two agreements in Tunis for a loan of 6.79 Units of Account (UA*)and a grant of UA 4.960 million, equivalent to a total amount of US$ 18 million to finance the Tanganyika Integrated Regional Development Programme (PRODAP).

This financing constitutes the DRC's share within the Integrated Regional Development Programme, covering Burundi, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia. The ADF operation will focus on the reinforcement of national and regional capacities of management and sustainable revival of water resources. The main objective of the project is to increase the target population incomes.

The project is intended to improve the social and health conditions of the people as well as the food situation in the Lake Tanganyika basin through the improvement of the fishery production, the construction of health and educational infrastructures and the provision of more drinking water points.

It will also improve feeder roads to facilitate the movement of people and goods, and improve regional integration and cooperation. Poor households and particularly women will largely benefit from the project, as a result of improvement in the processing and marketing of agricultural products. About 10,000 jobs will be created in the fisheries sub-sector.

During the signing ceremony, the Vice President of the ADB operations, Mr. Théodore Nkodo , recalled that commun efforts are needed to implement the effective start-up and the achievement of this project in order to accelerate its impact on the region's poverty reduction.

The DRC's Finance Minister, Mr. André Philippe Futa, joined the VP's wish regarding the contribution of the ADB Regional Country office, which will open in Kinshasa soon, to attain this objective.
