Celtel International, Africa's fastest growing mobile company, recently launched a 7 million USD state of the art Technical Center in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This new infrastructure will serve as a technical hub for not only the DRC but also other Celtel operations such as; Gabon, Congo B, Uganda, Chad, and Sierra Leone.
The recent inauguration was held in Kinshasa and attended by Vice-President, Abdoulaye Ndombasi and by the Governor of Kinshasa, M. Kimbembe Mazunga. Selected corporate partners, customers, and various government officials also attended the event.
Speaking at the Technical Center's Inauguration in Kinshasa, Celtel's Chief Executive Officer, Marten Pieters said ''our main focus at Celtel is to connect the people of Africa through telecommunications.''
''We recognize the hurdles, yet firmly believe in the future and economic development of this beautiful continent. We see the warmth, vibrancy, and possibilities of even the smallest village, all with their own unique beauty and potential. As all 53 countries work towards a better future we hope to play a significant role.''
As a result of Celtel's new Technical Center customers will enjoy an enhanced quality of service and extended network coverage throughout the region. In addition, pressure on international traffic will be significantly reduced allowing for better connections outside of customers home country.
All technical staff will now be ideally placed together in a comfortable and modern operational workstation with regular training on state-of-the art equipment and the latest technological trends. In addition to the large capital investment into Africa, a significant number new jobs have been directly and indirectly created as a result of the National Technical Center.
According to Celtel's Chief Operating Officer Omari Issa, ''Celtel has invested US 7 million in this project. This makes our total investment into Africa at approximately US 280 million today. This coupled with Celtel's wide network infrastructure confirms our position as the fastest growing mobile phone company on the continent. Currently, more than 270 million Africans in 14 different countries are using our network to communicate.''
Celtel International has mobile operations in 14 countries throughout Africa. In May 2005 Celtel was acquired by MTC of Kuwait for $3.4 Billion. The MTC Group is a leading provider of mobile telecommunication services in the Middle East.
