March 2006

This CD is a compilation of various Tanzanian artists and blends the best of Tanzanian music.  From jazz, to muziki wa dansi, bonga flava and taarab music.  Whether one is an African music enthusiast, new to the continent's music, or just curious, this CD has something for everyone.

Muziki was dansi is a music popularized by Tanzanian dance bands in the 1970s and can be heard on this CD by Mlimani Park Orchestra’s “Rehema” or through the jazz sounds of tracks like "Tambiko" by the Vijana Jazz Band and "Piga Ua" by the Ottu Jazz Band.  Bongo flava, a grassroots hip hop style that originated in Tanzania, is represented by the sound of Masai hip hop artists X Plastaz and their song "Dunia Dudumizi", as well as female Tanzanian hip hop artist Dataz and her song Mume Wa Mtu". Taatab music originated on Tanzania’a coast and infuses African, Arab, and Indian music styles.  Tracks like Ikhwani Safaa Music Club’s “Vingarvyo” or Mohammed Issa Matona’s “Msumeno”.

Overall the CD blends Tanzania’s best musical styles and offers a sample of authentic Tanzanian flavor that appeals to audiences of all of backgrounds.
