Washington, DC — Africare will present former President Bill Clinton with the 2006 Bishop John T. Walker Memorial Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award on October 18 at the 2006 Africare Bishop John T. Walker Memorial Dinner at the Washington Hilton. Past recipients of the award include then-President Nelson Mandela, former President Jimmy Carter, Ambassador Andrew Young, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, then-Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill and Melinda Gates and General Colin L. Powell.
The Africare Dinner plays a critical role in enabling Africare to both broaden awareness about Africare's work in Africa and to raise critically-needed funds to make delivery of life-saving services possible. Africare's mission is to help improve the quality of life in Africa. Since 1970, Africare has been working in partnership with local communities and governments in 36 countries to deliver more than $540 million in programs and services.
This year's Africare Dinner will highlight the needs of children in Africa-- in particular, the needs of children who have lost one parent or both parents due to HIV/AIDS or through other tragic circumstances. Africare is leading the way by devising a host of programs specifically designed to respond to the psychological, economic and social needs of children who need support responding to this challenge.
