The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) will be hosting, from 9-12 September, 2008 at Sheraton Hotel in Tunis, a series of statistical meetings.

The meetings will bring together all UN Agencies, the World Bank, IMF, bilateral agencies and African regional and sub-regional organizations involved in the development of statistics in the region. The meetings will essentially focus on the coordination of statistical activities in Africa and at the global level.

The main meetings scheduled to take place are:

The African Statistical Coordination Committee (ASCC): 9-10 September. The key objective of this meeting is to discuss mechanisms for achieving greater synergy between regional institutions, and for coordinating statistical programs and activities within the Regional Reference Strategic Framework for Statistical Capacity Building in Africa (RRSF). This will be with a view to enhancing and sustaining the effectiveness of statistical support to African countries.

The OECD Global Project Board meeting "Measuring the Progress of Societies": in afternoon of 10th September. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to formally establish the Governing Board of the Project, which is expected to include the OECD, European Union, United Nations, the International Statistical Institute, PARIS21, the World Bank, AfDB and other international organizations.

The Meeting of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA): 11-12 September. This Committee brings together key international and regional institutions engaged in statistical development work in the global statistical system to discuss coordination and related issues. The main objective of the CCSA meeting is to discuss modalities for sharing data among international organizations and coordinating statistical capacity building activities.

The meetings will offer opportunities for representatives of international and regional organizations to discuss effective mechanisms for achieving greater synergy amongst themselves as well as harmonizing their programs within existing coordination mechanisms. They will foster greater coordination of the institutions' programs and specific activities and thus help to increase efficiency and cost effectiveness in the delivery of statistical capacity building assistance to Africa for improved results measurement, MDG monitoring and reporting.
