Tunis — At the invitation of the Bank Group's Governance Department and the Chief Economist's office, Transparency International's Advisory Committee Chair, Peter Eigen, is scheduled to visit the African Development Bank Group from 22-23 September 2008 in Tunis, to make a key presentation to Bank staff on the fight against corruption in Africa. During his visit, he will also make a presentation to the institution's Board on the benefits of implementing the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

While in Tunis, Mr. Eigen will use the opportunity to announce TI 2008 Corruption Perception Index during a press conference scheduled to commence at 10 AM on Tuesday, 23 September 2008 in the Tunisian capital.

Founder of Transparency International (TI) and Chairman of the EITI Board, Mr. Eigen's visit is expected to increase visibility of Bank activities in the area of transparency and accountability, particularly activities related to extractive industries revenue management.

In the presentation to Bank staff titled "Fighting Corruption in Africa - A Call for New Partnerships", Mr. Eigen will analyze the root causes of failing governance of the globalized economy, and the new partnerships needed to address the gap in Africa and elsewhere. Mr. Eigen will give an account of how cooperation with NGOs like Transparency International has helped governments and businesses find an exit from the corruption trap.

The presentation to the AfDB Board on "The EITI - Making the Resource Boom Work for Africa" will provide an update on latest trends and developments in implementing and promoting the EITI on the African continent. He will discuss ways in which the AfDB can play a role in supporting the EITI. Mr. Eigen's presentation will be supplemented by an update by the Governance Department on the Bank's support in this area in 2007-08.

Mr. Eigen will be available for individual consultations with Executive Directors and staff. He will have informal meetings with Senior Management of the Governance Department on issues related to strengthening cooperation between the Bank and the EITI Secretariat, including the possible joint organization of an EITI Mediterranean meeting later this year.
