Malawi: Madonna's Newly-Adopted Child Prepares to Leave

15 June 2009

As pop star Madonna prepares to fly her newly-adopted Malawian child to New York, the child's father has reportedly given up efforts to keep her in Malawi.

Malawi's Supreme Court of Appeal approved the singer's application to adopt a second child from the country, Chifundo "Mercy" James, on June 12.

The Nyasa Times reported Monday that James Kambewa, who claims to be Chifundo's father, says he has given up the fight to keep her.

The newspaper quoted him as saying: "I cannot fight anymore. I wish the child all the best and Madonna should look after her very well. She should be made aware that her dad still lives in Malawi."

The child was living in an orphanage when Madonna selected her for adoption. Chifundo will be joining David Banda, a Malawian boy Madonna adopted in 2006, as well as Madonna's other children, when she leaves the country.
