The Bank Group delegation that was in India on an official visit devoted its third and last day in the country to information and communication technology. While in Bangalore, the country's new technology capital, Bank Group President, Donald Kaberuka, visited several local information technology companies.

While visiting Infosys, a company specialized in software development and design, the delegation gained a better understanding of India's progress in this domain. Infosys is a company with an annual sales figure of US$4.5 billion. It employs 100,000 people across the globe. One of its most recent and best known achievements is the design of the Airbus A380 wings.

Mr. Kaberuka is drawing on Infosys knowledge and is studying modalities for greater cooperation with the company's management, especially on how to work on inter-regional projects financed by the Bank Group such as the "Connect Africa" initiative. This project provides for a connection of African capitals by 2012 via underwater fiber optic cables. The "Connect Africa" initiative was launched in 2007 during a heads of state summit on ICTs in Kigali, Rwanda. Another highlight of the summit was the decision to create centres of excellence in five African regions.

India and the Bank Group have long-standing cooperation ties. The visit will help to increase areas of cooperation.
