While in Copenhagen where he was leading the AfDB delegation to the UN climate summit, Bank Group President, Donald Kaberuka, addressed African negotiators during a plenary session.

Mr. Kaberuka was in Copenhagen "first and foremost to encourage African participants." The AfDB is strongly supporting the negotiators and the strategy adopted by African leaders and their "lead negotiator", Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi.

During the meeting, Mr. Kaberuka provided a detailed account of Bank Group actions on climate change. He underscored that it was not possible to dissociate the issue of climate change from that of development.

In this regard, he drew attention to the ClimDev-Africa Special Fund and measures taken to protect the Congo Basin. The meeting on the Congo Basin Forest Fund organized by the AfDB was a great success, with many key actors participating. The Congo Basin Forest Fund is co-chaired by Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai and former Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin.
