Donald Kaberuka, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has just returned from a visit to China whose principal aim was how to strengthen cooperation between the Bank and China. During the three-day visit between 3 and 6 February 2010, he and his Chinese hosts shared their views on the ways and means of improving that cooperation. The Bank's president visited Beijing as well as Shengzhu,China's centre for new technology.
In Beijing, he met the Chinese authorities, beginning with the deputy prime minister, Wang Qishan. Mr Qishan concluded that: "China expects the AfDB to maintain its role as a bridge and platform to improve Sino-African relations". The AfDB delegation held talks with leaders in the Chinese banking sector, including the president of the Central Bank of China and China's Exim Bank. With all the representatives he met, President Kaberuka raised the policy of the Bank with regard to seeking additional resources, such as the General Capital Increase and the replenishment of the African Development Fund.
Conference on Poverty
The president also accepted the invitation from the International Centre for Poverty Reduction where he had a meeting and outlined the Bank's policy on the matter of development. There then followed an exchange of ideas with all the participants.
Finally, the president gave a lunch for all the African Ambassadors accredited to Beijing. The president presented to then the Bank's medium-term strategy and the need for the support of the regional member countries in responding to the economic and financial crisis and for the institution to obtain additional resources to meet Africa's needs in this situation.
