The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), organized in Tunis, 19-21 April 2010, a seminar on the preparation of its Triennale on education in Africa, a major event bringing together all of the major actors involved in or supporting the development of education in Africa.
Building on the "Maputo consensus", which recommends « a holistic, integrated and diversified approach of education systems that recognizes the essential diversity of modes of education provision and enables all children and young people to be integrated in an open and equitable system», the 2011 Triennale will focus on the knowledge and critical competencies and qualifications to promote for the sustainable development in Africa. The Maputo consensus stems from ADEA's last Biennale on post-primary education in Africa.
The objective of the Tunis seminar was to arrive to a common understanding of the theme and to explore the breadth of issues involved. The seminar also agreed on the substantive work which needs to be undertaken, including experiences to be documented and studies to be commissioned and on partners to involve.
ADEA Working Groups and representatives of African Ministries of Education and African research networks participated in this first phase of work, as well as representative of the African Development Bank and of UNESCO.
