Algeria - Team Overview

18 June 2010

Algeria's World Cup high point still remains beating West Germany at Espana 82 in Gijon.

However, what is now referred to as the infamous "Anschluss" arrangement between West Germany and Austria sent Algeria out of the tournament, despite having beaten West Germany and Chile. Four years later, a poor outing and a tough group in Mexico saw them exit early and they have not returned to the World Cup since.

Les Fennecs (the Desert Foxes), however, came back to win the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 1990 and they have slowly worked their way back as a competitive force. The fact that when Algeria kicks off against Slovenia on June 13, they will end a 24-year absence from football's greatest stage, qualifies as a victory in itself.

Previous FIFA World Cup Appearances: 1982, 1986.

Record: Won CAF Africa Cup of Nations, 1990
