Guinea: Country Earns UN Plaudits After Peaceful Staging of Presidential Election

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today commended Guinea for the successful staging of presidential elections, widely regarded as the first democratic polls in the West African country since independence more than 50 years ago.

Twenty-four candidates took part in yesterday's election, with a run-off round scheduled for next month if no single candidate receives more than 50 per cent of the overall votes.
