The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will take part in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA)'s Third International Parliamentary Conference on Climate Change (IPCCC), scheduled from 12-16 July, 2010 in London. The conference is held on the theme: "Global to Local: Climate Change Post-Copenhagen". The conference will bring together, over 150 parliamentarians from across the world, as well as representatives of development agencies and stakeholders involved climate change issue to share perspectives and figure out practical ways of contributing to local, national and global efforts to tackle climate change now and in the future.
Besides plenary and thematic sessions, there will be a parliamentary style debate on the challenges of addressing climate change through a democratic system. In addition, there will be a selection of delegate forums on the relationship between climate change and other topical issues such as conflict, gender, health and migration. There will be opportunities for NGOs and civil society organizations to share their work on climate change.
Represented by Climate Change Division Manager, Anthony Nyong, the AfDB will make a presentation on the role of international organisations in tackling climate change. The presentation will, in particular, focus on the advantages that development banks offer over other multilateral approaches, issues they particularly suited to deal with, and what examples of best practices exist. It will also highlight challenges that development banks face in addressing climate change and how these challenges can be overcome. The presentation will focus on the Bank's role in supporting climate change initiatives in Africa.
