Tanzania: This Year's Final Fiesta Headlined by Lil' Kim

11 August 2010

Dar es Salaam — After a series of concerts held throughout Tanzania, this year's final Fiesta was held in Dar es Salaam on August 7. The annual concert series, organized by Clouds FM, has a final show headlined by a major international act. This year it was American hip hop artist Lil 'Kim, who performed part of her show with Juma Nature. Other featured artists included Fid Q, Witness, Chege & Temba, Baghdad, Godzilla and Juma Nature. Among regional artists were JCB of Arusha, Baby J of Zanzibar and Izzo B of Mbeya.

The featured artists performed in several styles, including R&B and hip hop. This year's Fiesta crowd – reportedly the largest ever – responded well to the performers on stage. The show included a fireworks display and several artists from the Tanzania House of Talent (THT). THT helps groom talented street artists for the entertainment industry.

Lil' Kim's performance was provocative, as expected, and didn't disappoint the fans who had come to see the performer who is famous for her revealing outfits and sexually explicit lyrics. The crowd appeared to really enjoy the performance and Lil' Kim sang a number of her hit songs, as well as remixes of songs by Snoop Dog and Rihanna. Her homage to Notorious BIG was well received by the old school hip hop fans in the crowd who also seemed to enjoy some of Lil' Kim's more hardcore hip hop songs, such as "Get Money" and "Magic Stick".

With the increasingly frustrating traffic problems in Dar es Salaam, the worst thing about this year's Fiesta was arriving and leaving the venue. There were a few minor microphone glitches and some artists were a bit long winded. While lip-syncing may be common for performers, at least one artist at the Fiesta, Witness, was a little off with the music track, making the lip-syncing obvious. Otherwise, this year's final Fiesta went smoothly and the acts brought out top performances.
