The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Sudan on Wednesday, 22 September 2010 in Khartoum, signed a US.$ 1million emergency relief assistance grant agreement to help Khartoum State restore schools affected by floods.
The agreement was signed for the Bank by its Sudan Field Office (SDFO) Resident Representative Famara L. Jatta, while the Undersecretary at the Finance and National Economy ministry, Eltayab Abu Ganaya, signed for the Sudanese government in the presence of the Director General of the Ministry of Education, Hassan Osman.
The main objective of the emergency assistance is to provide a response to the urgent and immediate needs of flood victims in Khartoum State. The emergency assistance will cover two main activities:
School supplies and materials acquisition; and School infrastructure restoration and facility repairs, including sanitation.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Abu Ganaya acknowledged the Bank's continued valued support to Sudan and thanked the Bank for this support. He further assured the Bank that the resources provided would be efficiently used to serve the purpose for which they were intended.
For his part, Mr. Jatta emphasized the Bank's commitment to the Sudanese people and government, underscoring the need to accelerate the repair and acquisition of school supplies and materials of the affected schools for the benefit of the school children.
