The AfDB will attend the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank scheduled to take place from October 8-11, 2010, in Washington, D.C. An AfDB delegation, led by the institution's president, Donald Kaberuka, will comprise the institution's chief operating officer and other vice presidents. The IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings serve as a venue for the discussion of global issues such as global economic prospects, global financial stability, the fight against poverty, economic development and aid effectiveness. Some 13,000 participants are expected to attend this year's event. These include IMF-World Bank governors, their alternates and national delegates, observers representing intergovernmental organizations and civil society representatives.

The role of multilateral development banks in development efforts and Africa's place in the global economy will be among the themes to be discussed in Washington. For the AfDB, the event will be an opportunity to sensitize participants on its role, its major priorities, principal operations in the continent's development efforts and its future prospects. This will be taking place following the tripling of ADB's capital and the replenishment of ADF-12. Mr. Kaberuka will, in particular, participate in deliberations by the development committee.

The development committee will advise the IMF-World Bank boards of governors on key development issues and on financial resources that are necessary to promote economic growth and bolster efforts at fighting poverty in developing countries. Mr. Kaberuka will also attend a meeting of heads of multilateral development banks. The AfDB president, the chief operating officer, vice presidents and Bank Group experts will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with governors of AfDB member countries.
