Egypt: Mubarak's Sons Detained

13 April 2011

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his sons have reportedly been detained and will remain in custody for the next 15 days ahead of an investigation into corruption and abuse allegations.

AFP reports that Mubarak's sons Gamal and Alaa are accused of incitement to fire at demonstrators during protests that started on January 25.
Their father stepped down on 11 February after weeks of protests, handing control over to the army.

Reports by AFP and Al Jazeera say that prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud authorised detentions as part of an inquiry into the use of force against protesters in January and February.

A security source told AFP the pair were heading for the Tora prison in Cairo from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where they were interrogated.

According to BBC, the arrest took place a few hours after the former president was admitted to hospital. The 82-year-old apparently suffered heart problems, however, conflicting reports say he was well enough to undergo further questioning.
