General Konate Visits the Logistics Base of the African Stand by Force (ASF)

General Konate, High Level Representative of the African Union (AU) for the African Standby Force (ASF) Operation visited on Thursday, April 28, 2011, the site intended for the setting up of the continental logistics base of the ASF in Douala, Cameroon. This visit comes as part of the workshop on the third phase of the ASF which opened on April 27 in Douala.

The site, granted by the Government of Cameroon to the AU has numerous advantages. It is located in close proximity to the airport and the port of Douala and some infrastructures. Furthermore, the logistic base is connected to other secondary sites by rail. It covers an area of six hectares. An AU mission has already started an assessment of the site along with the renovations to be made.

The delegation led by Mr.Wane Ghassim, Director of Peace and Security of the AU, also visited the port of Douala which has the capacity required for receiving cargo and transshipment of materials for the CLB. Meanwhile, the operation of the logistics Base requires infrastructural support, 90% of the material used for support to Peace Operation is being transported by sea. Port authorities have confirmed that work is planned to increase the capacity of the port.
