The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved a loan of USD 88.8 million (UA 56 million) to finance The Improvement of Health Services Delivery at Mulango Hospital and the City of Kampala Project in Uganda. Mulago Hospital is the main National Referral and Teaching Hospital in Uganda.
The project will be co-financed by the African Development Fund (ADF) -- USD 72.9 million (UA 46 million) and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF) --USD 15.9 million (UA 10 million).
The project is designed to increase access to quality affordable health care services for the people of Uganda. It will target directly an estimated 3 million people in the Kampala metropolitan area, majority of them women and children under 15 years.
In line with the Bank's higher education and science and technology strategy, Uganda's National Development Plan as well as the Bank's 2011-2015 priorities for inclusive growth in Uganda, the project will build a center of excellence in medical technology and high quality medical and nursing education for Uganda and the Eastern Africa Region. It will support the development of biomedical science and technology and biomedical research and contribute to the creation of high quality jobs through biomedical technology and telemedicine.
