Rwanda: Exodus of Ugandan Teachers to Nation

Kampala — It's very difficult to make a living as an English teacher in Uganda - it's less of a viable profession and more of a sacrifice. Many teachers are being attracted to Rwanda by increased opportunities and pay.

Yubu Yerindabo aspires to do what more and more Ugandan English teachers are doing: move to neighbouring Rwanda. "In Uganda, teachers are not valued," explains Yerindabo (28) who holds a bachelor's degree in education from Kampala's Makerere University. "A teacher at a secondary school here earns an average of 450,000 shillings [around 140 euros] a month. In Rwanda, Ugandan teachers get up to 2,8 million [around 860 euros]. And unlike here, they also get paid on time."
