South Africa: Traditional Courts Bill Criticised in Parliament

The National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL) has indicated that traditional courts will continue to operate as normal whether or not the controversial Traditional Courts Bill is passed into law.

The Bill, mooted in 2003, has been criticised as a means to shore up the traditional leaders' autocratic powers by using customary law as a smokescreen.
