Liberia: Chiefs Suspend Traditional Bush Schools

The Chairman of the National Traditional Council of Liberia (NTCL) Chief Zanzar Karwor has with immediate effect suspended the traditional practice of poro and sande societies throughout the country until the council identifies bushes were initiation ceremonies would be performed.Chief Karwor told a press conference Thursday, that due to the operation and expansion of concession activities throughout the country, it would be imperative that the council locates all areas were poro and sande society activities would be performed in order to avoid confrontation and desecration of their 'scared' places.

The decision by the Council was prompted by the action of three traditional symbolic figures of the poro society known as "country Devils" on Tuesday which brought normal working activities to a standstill at the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) in Gibi District, Margibi County.
