The Constituency for Africa (CFA) organized a delegation of Diaspora leaders today at the State Department to meet with the outgoing Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Ambassador Johnnie Carson.
Ambassador Carson is leaving his post following four years leading the Obama Administration's Africa policy. Ambassmelador Carson is expected to wrap up his tenure at the State Department sometime in late March.
The CFA delegation was led by President and CEO, Melvin Foote and included Jeannine Scott, the President of the US and Angola Chamber of Commerce, Pauline Jackson, the Interim President of the American Association of Blacks in Energy, Mamadou Beye, Manager for International Affairs at Chevron, Emira Woods, the Co-Director for the Institute for Policy Studies, renowned Pan-Africanist Dr. Julius Garvey, and Crispian Kirk, the President of OIC International.
The delegation discussed a range of issues and topics concerning Africa with special interest on expectations of the Obama Administration with respect to Africa in the second term. Issues discussed were broad and included US trade policy, energy, agriculture development, military and security issues, the impact of climate change in Africa and the role and responsibility of Americans of African descent (Diaspora) to organize and influence the policy debate in Washington.
Melvin Foote of CFA was very pleased with the meeting. Said Foote, "Ambassador Carson has provided great access to the constituency we represent and has been open to our ideas and recommendations. We are looking forward to continuing to work with him once he leaves government, and of course will work with the person who succeeds him" to continue to influence and shape the Africa policy".
