Africa's economic growth has accelerated in recent years, yet the quality and inclusiveness of this growth remain a major concern to policymakers, researchers, development partners and, most importantly, the ordinary people it is expected to benefit.
To gain a deeper understanding of inclusive growth in Africa, the African Development Bank (AfDB) in conjunction with the Korea Development Institute (KDI) and the Ethiopia Development Research Institute (EDRI) will be holding an Expert Group Meeting to be hosted by EDRI in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from May 6-7, 2013.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the outcome of ongoing research on inclusive growth being undertaken by the AfDB and KDI. In order to deepen our understanding of inclusive growth in Africa, experts working in this or related areas are also hereby invited to submit completed papers to be included in the discussion during the Expert Group Meeting. High-quality papers may be considered for publication as chapters of a book for the AfDB/KDI Inclusive Growth Project or as a Working Paper for the AfDB.
Applicants should be affiliated to an academic or research institution or working in a policy institution in Africa such as central banks, Ministry of Finance, etc. African doctoral students and women, interested in the area of inclusive growth, are especially encouraged to apply. Papers may focus of the following broad topics:
Challenges of achieving inclusive growth in African
Understanding income inequality in Africa
Social protection: impact and lessons
Tackling intergenerational poverty
Infrastructure investment for inclusion
Regional integration for inclusive growth
The role of private sector in promoting inclusive growth in Africa
Other topics relevant to the broad theme of inclusive growth will be considered.
Case studies are especially encouraged. Only completed papers meeting the rigorous review criteria will be selected for presentation. The Bank will offer a modest honorarium for authors of accepted papers and meet the cost of travel and accommodation for participants outside Addis Ababa.
