Malawi President Launches Water Supply and Sanitation Project

A water supply and sanitation system supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) was launched on April 15, 2013, in Malosa, Malawi by Malawi President Joyce Banda.

The project will serve seven market centres in the area. The project is part of the National Water Development Programme, supported by the AfDB with loans and grants from the African Development Fund (ADF) and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund. The project cost amounts to USD 64.17 million, with an additional USD 14.0 million in co-financing by the Australian Government Overseas Aid Program (AusAID).

At the opening ceremony, President Banda thanked the AfDB and AusAID for the continued support to Malawi's infrastructure development and economic growth agenda and poverty reduction efforts. She emphasized that water was a catalyst for the growth of the key sectors such as energy and transport and for achieving the targets of Malawi's Economic Recovery Plan.

The AusAID representative, Mr. Andrew Edge acknowledged the continued AfDB and AusAID support to the sector as stipulated in the Malawi Country Strategy Paper (2013-17). The AfDB was represented at the ceremony by Benson Nkhoma, Principal Water and Sanitation Officer.
