The European Union Commission (EUC) has expressed reservations at the signing into law of the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act by President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that some provisions of the Act contradicted fundamental human rights.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the commission, Ms. Catherine Ashton, in a statement issued yesterday, said the commission was concerned about the signing of the bill into law. "The EU is opposed to discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. It is firmly committed to fundamental human rights and the rule of law in respect of those rights, including freedom of association, conscience and speech and the equality of persons. It supports the respects of human rights in all countries of the world," the statement read.
