Nigeria: In GE, We Look At Competence, Not Race

Susan Peters, Senior Vice President, Corporate Human Resources, General Electric (GE) sits atop a global organisation that believes in recruiting the best and at the same time bringing the best out of its employees irrespective of where they come from. Peters was in Nigeria recently and shares her experiences with Funke Olaode on how performance plays a key role on her way to the top

How would you describe your experience coming to Nigeria for the first time? I have been to other African countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and so on. This is my first time in Lagos. I have enjoyed being here. It is phenomenal. It is always wonderful being in sub-Saharan part of the continent particularly Nigeria where there is so much opportunity and growth and General Electric is so well positioned to help in the country. What does your job entail in General Electric? I lead the human resource team looking over 31,000 employees from 160 different countries around the world. Our team is responsible for attracting, retiring, developing, retaining and growing all the people around the world in whatever job they are doing in GE.
