Egypt: Court Sentences 529 Mursi Supporters to Death

AFP reports that 529 supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Mursi have been sentenced to death during a mass trial.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands arrested during a deadly crackdown by the authorities on supporters of Mursi, according to AFP.

The sentence was delivered in the second hearing of the trial in Minya, south of the capital.

The charges included murder, a defence lawyer told Reuters.

Of those sentenced, 153 are in detention and the rest are on the run, according to sources, and 17 accused were acquitted. The verdict can be appealed.
