Addis Ababa — Following a mandate from the Rio + 20 Summit, the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) established by the UN General Assembly in June 2013 is charged with producing a report proposing options on an effective sustainable development financing strategy. The strategy is aimed at facilitating the mobilization of resources and their effective use in achieving sustainable development objectives.
As a result, a two-day outreach to garner the views of African stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector, is being organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in collaboration with UNDESA and UN-NGLS, from 2-3 May 2014 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The two sessions will be jointly chaired by a member of the ICESDF and HLC.
The key objective of the meeting is to discuss and articulate clear priorities and key messages on sustainable development financing, from Africa's perspective, for consideration by the Committee at its Fourth Session to be held from 12 to 16 May 2014.
The priority issues within the themes will be financing regional infrastructure and industrial Development; financing for climate change and green growth in Africa; improving domestic resource mobilization; and management of external financing. The target is to have at least one government representative from each African Least Developing Country (LDC) and a mixture of non-State actors from major groups such as women, children and youth, indigenous people, Non-Governmental Organizations, local authorities, workers and trade unions, business and industry, science and technology community, and farmers across all African LDCs.
It is expected that the meeting will provide an occasion for the region to sharpen the focus of recommendations included in those reports. The outcome this outreach meeting will be transmitted to the full ICESDF.
