Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, September 11, 2014 - The African Development Bank will participate in the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit on September 23, 2014. The Summit will provide a platform for the world leaders from governments, private sector and civil society to make bold announcements and catalyze actions on climate change ahead of a binding legal agreement to take place in 2015 to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. The presence of AfDB is critical to draw attention to the key climate change challenges that impact Africa.
Key objectives for the AfDB:
Foster global political commitment on climate change solutions including those tailored to the African context;
Call for enhanced climate finance resource flows particularly from the private sector with an increased focus on adaptation;
Encourage the need for accelerated development of resilient infrastructure in Africa, especially in the energy sector where the growing demand needs to be met, capitalizing inter alia on the Bank's role as host of the SE4ALL Africa Hub and on innovative AfDB instruments such as the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa and the Africa50 Fund.
The AfDB will actively participate in the following events:
ClimDev-Africa High-Level Panel, September 22, 2014 on "Moving against the tide: Africa rising to seize climate change opportunities in water, food and energy security".
Building a Global Alliance of Sustainable Energy Financing Banks on September 22; co-hosted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Private Sector Forum as well as the Energy and Finance Sessions of the Climate Summit on September 23, 2014.
