Ibrahim Shuaibu writes that the victims of Pfizer's experimental antibiotic, Trovan, can now smile after the final compensation paid by the multinational pharmaceutical company.

A few weeks ago, it was all smiles for some households in Kano State. They have been in pain for nearly two decades. In 1996, Pfizer tested the experimental antibiotic Trovan on children during a meningitis outbreak without receiving adequate prior consent. That test led to the death of some 11 children and harm to dozens of others in the 200-patient trial in Kano.
