There is perhaps little surprise at the name of the star performer in the weekend's first four matches at the African Nations Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea as this is a player whose reputation continues to grow at pace.

Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was sublime in his side's 2-0 win over fancied Burkina Faso, scoring one goal and playing an instrumental role in the build-up to the second.

He is the undoubted talisman of the side, taking over from Daniel Cousin, and presenting much more ability than his predecessor ever held.

Aubameyang is no stranger to fans from the continent, of course - he was short-listed in the top three for the African Footballer of the Year prize for 2014, but missed out to Cote d'Ivoire colossus Yaya Toure.

Aubameyang has shown, even in a Borussia Dortmund side that has battled in the German Bundesliga this season, that he is surely a future winner of that crown.

It is not just the goals he scores, but also the way he links up the play with his midfield and his ability to fashion chances for teammates with his quick footballing brain.

And he has ambition too - the 25-year-old says he wants to create legend status to match Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o.

"I try to do the maximum so as to be a big star like Drogba and Eto'o," he told reporters after Saturday's win.

"In the warm-up, the fans cheered me. That is not pressure. It's expectation for me as it motivates me and pushes me to shine. When people expect big things from you, you try to do big things."

It has not all been plain-sailing for Aubameyang. He missed a decisive penalty for Gabon in the 2012 quarter-finals, which they co-hosted with Equatorial Guinea, and were bundled out of the competition.

"That miss helped me to grow up very quickly," he said. "But for this competition, we are starting from the scratch. It's a new tournament and it has begun well for me with a goal.

"I hope we reach the quarter-final again and if we got another penalty then, I will score it."

Born in Laval, France to a former Gabon international footballer and Spanish mother, he enjoyed a journeyman existence as a child, moving about wherever his father played.

This included back home in Gabon, Colombia and Italy, giving him an education in the contrasting styles of football.

He has two older brothers, both professionals as well, but they have not done as well. All three started their careers at AC Milan, but while Pierre-Emerick has flourished, the others have not enjoyed his same success.

Eldest brother Catilina is also a Gabon international, making a handful of appearances in the mid-2000s, while Willy is an international too but currently plays in the lower leagues in Germany.

If Gabon are to go far at the Nations Cup then Aubameyang will have played a big part in that. If he can help them lift the trophy then that African Footballer of the Year prize for 2015 will be much more of a certainty.
