Madagascar: Malagasy Legislators Vote to Impeach President

27 May 2015

Malagasy legislators have voted to impeach President Hery Rajaonarimampianina for "serious and repeated violations of the Constitution", reports L'Express de Madagascar, from the capital, Antananarivo.

The newspaper said that after Parliament voted for impeachment by 121 votes to four, the president's future now lay in the hands of the country's constitutional court.

But Agence France-Presse reported on Wednesday that in a televised address to the nation, Rajaonarimampianina challenged the legality of the move. He also said that only 80 legislators had been in the assembly for the vote.
