8 July 2015
press release

ECA is organising the Third African Road Safety Conference on 9 and 10 July 2015 at the United Nation Conference Centre in Addis Ababa.

The conference will focus on the mid-term review of the African Road Safety Action Plan (2011-2020) and is organised in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), African Transport Policy Programme (SSATP), the Global Road Safety Facility of the World Bank, the International Road Federation (IRF) and other partners. The overall objective of the conference is to ensure the effective participation of Africa at the mid-term review of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety to be held in Brasilia in November 2015. The specific objectives, among others are to: determine the extent to which member States have implemented the African Road Safety Action; and identify the challenges to the implementation of the Action Plan as well as the remedial measures.

The conference will be preceded by a workshop on "UN Road Safety Conventions and Approaches to Preventing Drink-Driving" for French-speaking African countries to be held also at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa on 7-8 July 2015. The workshop is organised by ECA, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), and the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD).
