Ethiopia: Obama Asked to Defend Media Freedom On Africa Tour

Reporters Without Borders has written to US President Barack Obama asking him to raise the issue of freedom of information with his counterparts during his tour of Kenya and Ethiopia that begins today.

The situation is very disturbing in Ethiopia, where there are no longer any independent news media and ten journalists are currently detained. In Kenya, journalists are forced by anti-terrorism legislation to censor themselves and are sometimes subjected to direct pressure from government officials.
